A smart city with modern connectivity for traffic surveillance

Specializing in industrial digital communication, Korenix, a Beijer Group company, is a leading solutions provider across the world for cabled and wireless Internet systems. Providing core technologies for the “smart city” concept, Korenix products help monitor traffic in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Facilitating surveillance to monitor traffic

In collaboration with the Taipei City Government in Taiwan, Korenix was commissioned to provide access points to link outdoor surveillance equipment with the city government’s traffic control system

The incentive for the project was to be able to facilitate the transmission of CCTV footage from intersections in Taipei city to a central control center. Establishing a wired connection at an intersection would be very difficult, and the city was looking for a wireless connection.

The purpose of the surveillance is to monitor and manage traffic from a central control room, to be able redirect traffic in rush hour when needed, make temporary traffic changes or notifying the police and ambulances of accidents. All with the purpose to make the traffic flow as smoothly as possible.

High load on the city network

Taipei City’s has an excellent infrastructure for Wi-Fi service and 4G network base stations, with nearly total coverage over the entire city. However, with the installed equipment attuned for the 2.4Ghz frequency band, there had been a lot of disturbance since this was already the primary frequency used by Wi-Fi network providers around the city. The large amount of interference often led to instability of the Wi-Fi data transmission, causing lagging and frequent disconnections.

A high-quality connectivity

Korenix was chosen due to the industrial grade quality of the products enabling them to function in extreme weather conditions. The goal is to provide a reliable wireless solution for transmitting video signals video to a traffic surveillance and control center of Taipei city. Korenix offered the JetWave 2460 device as a solution to assist the city government with the transition from physical wiring to wireless. The device is designed to support both 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz frequencies and has also in-built Auto Channel Survey (ACS) functions. This function will allow the device to periodically detect whether it is on the “best” Wi-Fi frequency and, if it detects a better frequency with less or zero interference, it will automatically switch over. This allow the device to function on the best Wi-Fi network possible.

"With the solution in place, Taipei city has been able to improve the time to allocate fire trucks and ambulances in case of an accident up to 8,7 % faster, a great improvement for a more secure traffic."

A smart city, getting even smarter

After introducing the JetWave device on-site, the locale’s 5.8Ghz was determined to be the frequency that is relatively clean and with minimum interference. Since the switch to the 5.8Ghz, the network has not experienced any disconnections and has met the Taipei City government’s expectations of a system providing highly reliable wireless transfers.

With the solution in place, Taipei city has been able to improve the time to allocate fire trucks and ambulances in case of an accident up to 8,7 % faster, a great improvement for a more secure traffic.
